About Us

Our nation was founded by like-minded individuals who share ideas and resources to achieve shared goals and we continue to grow stronger, so to does the Capital District Fly Fishers.

Taking advantage of the synergy created when anglers band together in support of conservation, restoration and education.  The Capital District Fly Fishers came to be in early 1977 from the efforts of several dedicated individuals, and celebrates over 32 years of existence and service to New York State and the Capital District area’s fly fishing community.

Its members share the belief that fly fishing is not only the most conservative way to practice the sport, is  also the most fun and it need not cost a lot to get started.  Towards that end, the primary activity of the Capital District Fly Fishers is the teaching of fly fishing skills, fly tying, the ethics of angling and the stewardship of our resources.

Its publication, The Backlash, is sent to all members of the Capital District Fly Fishers nine times a year, keeping our members up to date on fly fishing news, upcoming events and more.  The publication has kept pace with the times and now takes advantage of modern publishing technologies, it is distributed electronically, thru e-mail with color photos and internet links.

The Capital District Fly Fishers, while not having a brick and mortar headquarters, holds it meetings regularly at the VFW Post 8692, 140 VFW Drive, Colonie, NY 12206 on the third Wednesday of the month, September thru May.  Our meetings start at 6:30 with a featured fly tiers corner and the formal meeting gets underway at 7:00 which generally includes a guest speaker educating us on some aspect related to our love of fly fishing (flies and fish: cold, warm or saltwater).  The Capital District Fly Fishers has a long history of passing on the tradition of the long rod, thru fly tying classes, casting clinics and public demonstrations such as those at the Great Northeast Outdoor Show.

If you are reading this, the urge to fish runs deep in you and you probably fish locally as often as you are able and occasionally travel to fish.  We invite you to wade a little deeper and get involved by joining our club.  As a fly fisher, you get back much more from your involvement in the sport.  It fulfills your life on many levels.  If you are thinking it is time you joined a club, consider the Capital District Fly Fishers.  Click here for the printable PDF membership application.
